Trigemino Cervical Pain

Trigemino-cervical pain condition we refers to a Relationship between the upper neck Cervical region, Temporo Mandibular Joint of (Jaw), and Trigeminal Nerve, which can be associated with a wide range of Neurological facial pain conditions that affect the neck, face, and head area.

The upper two cervical Atlanto occipital and atlanto axial joints in the neck are uniquely shaped compared to the rest of the cervical spine. They demonstrate a different range of movement patterns, with their own special muscles attached with joints and to produce flexion ,extension, and rotational, movements. and have a special connections to the central nervous system, that the rest of the surrounding tissues attached with other cervical vertebrae do not have. In particular concern , these joints connect to a cluster of Nerve tissue that joins a number of areas in the face and skull. The jaw joint also shares close relationship with nerve tissue of Trigeminal nerve, and can be involved in the same way as the upper neck.

Neurological signals from pressure, temperature, or other sensory stimulus of these muscles or joints tissues can initiate signals and being forwarded to our brain and the sensory nerves of our skull and face.
In this way, the muscles and joints in the upper neck and mandible can contribute to the average Tension headache as well as the more complex association for Migraine and other painful conditions by involving the face area. People who are experiencing headache complaints will also typically demonstrate increased sensitivity in these areas.

At a physiological level, all of our sensory sensation is at some point electrical signals carried by our nerve tissue. The mechanical forces and feelings of the upper neck and mandible can amplify the signal of nearby nerves. If this amount of electrical signal is above a certain threshold in the body, it has valid reasons to produce feelings of tension, pain, numbness, tingling, pins & needles, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), headache, and more. That may be considered as migraine type headache!

If the nerves belongs to skull areas, if particularly irritated, the presentation can include congestion of the different sinuses like frontal ethmoidal, watering of the eyes with excessive lacrimation, and irritability of the eyelids. Some more unusual symptoms that can be attributed to this area include bulging of the eyes, running sinuses, a sense of fullness in the ears, a feeling of tightness in the throat, and a general flushing of the skin in the neck and face.

Assessment and treatment of conditions that affect the Trigemino-cervical Complex and surrounding tissues can often be complex mechanism and its require multiple approach and professionals to organise a definitive orientation. With team of Interventional Pain Physicians Neuro- Physicians, Neurosurgeons and Specialists such often work together to manage all clinical aspects of disorders!.

Its not mandator that every time patients having mechanical relationship, as there are several others diseases and medical and surgical conditions which can be a root cause, still it can be of great value to look into conservative and non-invasive medical treatment before moving on to more investigations and tests.

With appropriate interventional pain management and restoration of the mechanical features in these areas, including hands on and conservative treatment , the overall stress on the tissues and nervous system can typically be reduced. At great extent with proven results.
